Balgownie was named after the shire of Balgownie in Aberdeen, Scotland where founder Stuart Anderson’s descendants originated.

Winemaker Stuart Anderson established Balgownie Estate’s Bendigo vineyards in 1969 with initial plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. From here Balgownie become an influential red wine producer in regional Victoria, producing rich savoury flavours with moderate alcohol and intelligent use of oak.

Estate Shiraz 2017:

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a deep dark red hue. Elevated aromas of blackberry and liquorice have a strong toasty vanillin oak overlay followed by dried herb and blackpepper notes. Ripe and lush, the palate is boldly flavoured with rich blackberry and liquorice fruits which run into some prominent toasty vanillin oak, dried herb and spicy pepper characters. Opulent mouthfeel with chewy tannins and a long aftertaste that has a lingering charry vanillin oak component to it.
